Job Description

Gorrill Palmer is seeking a talented and career minded individual to serve as the Controller at our corporate office located in South Portland, Maine. We are seeking an individual that has an interest in initially learning and managing our various accounting functions but also has a desire to potentially become the Chief Financial Officer as our firm continues to grow. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to contribute to firm growth, be a trusted advisor to senior management and lead the selection and management of support staff for accounting/office personnel.

 Job Description

 As an essential member of our executive team, the successful candidate will manage all accounting operations inclusive of invoicing, accounts receivable, accounts payable, payroll, job costs and general ledger. Supervision of accounting and office personnel. Preparation of management reports.

Responsibilities 

  • Assist management with financial tracking, analysis and participate in decision-making
  • Refine and maintain corporate accounting procedures and policies
  • Oversee all accounting operations undertaken by the company
  • Oversee month-end closing functions including posting of adjusted journal entries and analysis/reconciliation of balance sheet and profit/loss accounts
  • Assist with special projects for the president
  • Manage and direct internal accounting controls
  • Collaborate with project managers to review job status and performance against budget
  • Identify projects that are not on track to ensure early intervention with corrective measures
  • Collaborate with project managers regarding monthly project billing including validation of percent complete, and ensuring labor and direct job costs are being accurately billed
  • Oversee monthly invoicing
  • Oversee and monitor accounts receivables
  • Oversee and monitor accounts payables
  • Manage the review, selection and implementation of insurance coverages
  • Assist with payroll processing
  • Receives direction primarily from president and principals/associates
  • Supervision and mentoring of administrative staff.
  • Coordinate administrative staff duties with all professional & technical staff
  • Prepare and assist with year end and tax preparation activities
  • Oversee preparation of annual audit data for transmission to external accounting firm
  • Reconciliation of bank accounts monthly
  • Develop recommendations on company policies based on data analysis to ensure that financial planning is consistent with company goals

 

Qualifications

  • Minimum 5+ years of relevant experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, economics, or comparable field
  • Strong leadership qualities
  • Verifiable experience in accounting and financial management
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to refine and maintain internal controls
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to multitask, prioritize workload and delegate to produce desired results
  • Strong computer skills in MS Office. Knowledge of Deltek Ajera/Quickbooks preferred
