The Department of Environmental Protection, Bureau of Remediation and Waste Management, is seeking to fill a Senior Environmental Hydrogeologist vacancy in Bangor.

 

BRIEF JOB DESCRIPTION: This position manages the petroleum remediation program in the Department’s Eastern Maine Regional Office in Bangor. The position develops conceptual site models to establish appropriate risk-based clean-up goals that are protective of human health and the environment; conducts site cleanups; assigns work to subordinates; oversees work performed by staff and contractors to ensure that regulations and guidelines are followed; and prepares annual budgets for site cleanups to ensure that sites are remediated in an efficient and effective manner. As a working supervisor, this position spends about 60% of the time on site investigation, mitigation, and remediation in support to bureau programs. The position collaborates with staff throughout the Department to achieve clean-up goals and assists with other project work as needed. The position also provides hydrogeologic support to other bureau programs including RCRA, Solid Waste, Uncontrolled Sites, Brownfield, VRAP, and PFAS programs.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: An eight (8) year combination of education and/or professional experience in geology or a related field.

LICENSING/REGISTRATION/CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: (These must be met by all employees prior to attaining permanent status in this class): Licensed as a Maine Licensed Geologist by the Board of Licensure of Geologists and Soil Scientists.

Preference will be given to candidates with the following skills and experience:

  • Demonstrated experience in oral and written communication of technical information to a wide variety of audiences, including presentations in public forums.
  • Experience with GIS mapping and electronic data management skills.
  • Demonstrated experience bringing groups, particularly project teams of technical staff, to consensus. 
  • Demonstrated experience coordinating work efforts with other government entities (towns, other state agencies, or federal agencies). 
  • Ability to identify and analyze problems, reach logical conclusions, and make sound, cost-effective decisions.
  • Ability to manage projects and personnel in order to meet project deadlines.
