Job Summary
Located in Brunswick, Maine, Bowdoin College boasts a student population of almost 2000. Our Dining Services Department makes everything from scratch and are consistently rated in the top 10 for college dining! We have our own butcher shop, bakeshop, and organic garden that all supply food to our two dining halls and three retail locations.
The Kitchen Prep Assistant at Moulton Dining Hall plays a key role in supporting food production operations. Under the supervision of the Head Chef, Assistant Chef/Cold Food Production Coordinator, and guidance from the Production Assistant Lead, this position is responsible for preparing daily cold food items, maintaining cleanliness, and assisting in customer service functions. The ideal candidate will demonstrate strong attention to detail and a commitment to food safety.
Key Responsibilities:
- Support food line setup, service, and cleanup, adhering to portion control and food safety procedures
- Prepare ingredients for hot and cold food production
- Read and prepare recipes to specifications
- Monitor and record refrigerator and freezer temperatures
- Safely operate cold food prep equipment to assist with cold food production and assembly for catering functions
- Maintain cleanliness of kitchen, storage, and dining areas, including cleaning equipment and emptying trash
- Adhere to safety and sanitation guidelines, ensuring a clean and sanitary workspace
- Provide occasional coverage at the checking station, verifying student IDs and meal eligibility
Pay, Benefits, and Perks:
- The starting pay rate for this position is $18.65 per hour
- New employees in Dining will receive a $500 sign-on bonus (½ paid at first check and ½ paid after 90 days of eligibility requirements are met)

Education/Skills Requirements
- High school diploma or GED required
- Vocational/technical training preferred
- Current ServeSafe certification or willingness to attain through Bowdoin College
- Demonstrated understanding of basic food preparation techniques and their application in catering and/or institutional settings
- Knowledge of food safety and sanitation practices
- Strong attention to detail and ability to follow instructions
- Effective communication skills and customer service orientation
- Ability to operate kitchen equipment safely
Experience Requirements and/or Equivalents
- At least 1 year of relevant experience
- Experience in food service or culinary setting highly preferred
Standard Work Days and Hours
- This is a full-time, onsite position working 40 hours/52 weeks (1.0 FTE)
- The work schedule is Sunday – Thursday from 7 am to 3 pm
- This is an essential role with requirements to work occasional overtime, holidays, and during weather emergencies, in addition to major college events and weekends (i.e., Parent’s Weekend, Commencement, and Reunions)
- The anticipated start date will be on or after June 1, 2025
