As a Lead Carpenter II at Woodhull, you are an experienced site leader and expert craftsman responsible for overseeing all self-performed and subcontracted carpentry scopes on high-end residential projects. This position includes expanded responsibility for on-site management, coordination of trade partners, and active collaboration with Project Management and Design teams to ensure that every detail meets Woodhull’s standards for quality, precision, and design intent.
You will lead carpentry crews, direct subcontractor work, and serve as the primary on-site representative for day-to-day operations, ensuring that construction progresses safely, efficiently, and in accordance with drawings, specifications, and project schedules. This role combines hands-on craft leadership with site management, communication, and problem-solving — serving as the bridge between field execution and overall project coordination.
As part of our field team, you will be working on the following:
Manage the field carpentry team to execute all frame-to-finish carpentry scopes in accordance with structural and architectural plans and specifications
Develop the daily carpentry schedule and ensure it is maintained efficiently
Ensure all work on the job site is performed safely, with the highest level of craftsmanship, and within budgeted hours and project specifications
Oversee the daily filing of field team timecards for accuracy and compliance with contract documents
Manage the installation of all millwork and hardware in accordance with shop drawings and project specifications
Coordinate and oversee daily activities of subcontractors on-site, ensuring each trade’s work aligns with drawings, specifications, and Woodhull’s standards.
Verify that subcontracted scopes are completed in sequence, on schedule, and integrated smoothly with self-performed work
Facilitate communication between subcontractors, carpentry crews, and project management to proactively resolve questions, field conditions, and scheduling conflicts
Communicate and collaborate with architects and designers to confirm details and ensure that design intent is executed accurately in the field
Identify discrepancies or constructability issues in the field and communicate these promptly through Procore RFIs or direct coordination with Project Management and Design
Support the Project Superintendent or Project Manager with material takeoffs, procurement, and logistics planning
Oversee and maintain all Woodhull tools and equipment
Ensure job site cleanliness, organization, and material management on site.
Enforce Woodhull’s Safety Program, ensuring compliance with OSHA regulations and proactive hazard mitigation
Serve as the on-site point of contact for clients, subcontractors and design professionals, fostering clear, respectful, and solutions-oriented communication
Train, mentor, and develop the next generation of fine craftspeople
General Duties:
Model and enforce proper use of tools, equipment, and safety protocols
Monitor crew productivity, quality, and adherence to schedule
Review and interpret construction drawings, details, and specifications
Contribute to site reporting, including daily logs, RFIs, and photo documentation through Procore
Maintain accurate records of labor, materials, and daily progress for assigned scopes
Contribute to problem-solving, workflow optimization, and constructability discussions
On site subcontractor communication regarding critical alignment, specification, schedule and budget
Qualified candidates will demonstrate the following:
5–7 years of carpentry experience, including at least 3 years in a Lead Carpenter role, or an equivalent combination of field and trade leadership experience
Advanced proficiency in all phases of residential carpentry, with proven ability to lead both crews and subcontractors
Strong understanding of residential construction systems, sequencing, and design coordination.
Proficiency in reading and interpreting architectural and structural drawings, shop drawings, and specifications.
Ability to balance hands-on carpentry with supervisory responsibilities for field crew and subcontractors
Demonstrated ability to communicate professionally and effectively with design staff and clients
Experience with digital project management tools (Procore preferred) and daily reporting workflows
Strong communication, organization, and problem-solving abilities
Commitment to craftsmanship, safety, team development, and continuous improvement
Must have reliable transportation and a valid driver’s license.
Must be able to commute within an hour of Portland, ME
Use of company vehicles is contingent upon a driving record that meets insurance requirements. Driving records are reviewed at least annually
Physical Requirements:
Stand for 8-10 hours per day
Climb and work from stairs and ladders
Independently push, pull, carry, and lift up to 80 lbs
Safely work with sharp tools and power equipment
Bend, stoop, and work around wood dust and fumes
Work in indoor/outdoor environments, subject to changing conditions, and at times in inclement weather conditions
May be exposed to heights and loud noises
Manual dexterity, a good sense of balance, and excellent hand-eye coordination
