The Maine Recovery Access Project and the Maine Recovery Action Project (collectively known as ME-RAP) are sister nonprofit organizations (501(c)(3)/(4)) led by people in recovery, people who use drugs, and their allies.

We’re a grassroots movement fighting for programs, policies, and systems that center healing, dignity, and justice—working toward a Maine where everyone has what they need to live well.

Position Overview

The Advocacy Coordinator supports ME-RAP’s statewide policy work through coordination, communication, and logistical support. This role helps ensure that organizing efforts, legislative campaigns, and community partnerships stay connected and moving forward. Working closely with the Policy Director, this position provides key behind-the-scenes support for ME-RAP’s organizing network and legislative advocacy efforts.

This role is ideal for someone who is highly organized, detail-oriented, and passionate about grassroots advocacy and community coalition building. Your work with event coordination, campaign support, and communication of policy work will ensure that internal and external stakeholders have the information and tools they need to advocate effectively.

Key Responsibilities

Organizing Coordination & Team Support

Attend weekly Statewide Organizing Team meetings, take notes, track attendance, and send follow-up summaries and action items.
Observe external meetings and produce clear summaries highlighting key information and updates for Director-level staff.
Assist in building and maintaining relationships between organizers, partners, and community members.
Help coordinate local organizing events, including preparation, materials, transportation coordination, and other logistics.
Support planning and logistics for statewide campaign events, such as lobby days and advocacy gatherings.
Track participation, activities, and outcomes across statewide organizing efforts.
Attend coalition and community meetings to take notes, share updates, and strengthen communication between ME-RAP and partner networks.

Policy & Legislative Campaign Support

Support coordination of legislative campaigns and policy advocacy initiatives in collaboration with the Policy Director.
Assist in tracking information and policy updates related to the Maine State Legislature and legislative process.
Help communicate legislative updates and campaign opportunities to organizers and community members.
Provide background support for advocacy meetings, testimony preparation, and campaign coordination.

Digital Organizing & Communications

Assist in creating and sharing action alerts related to organizing and legislative campaigns.
Support development of graphics, campaign materials, and accessible toolkits using platforms such as Canva.
Help ensure organizers and community members have timely and accurate information about events, campaigns, and advocacy opportunities.
Support the creation of the monthly Maine Recovery Action Project newsletter.

Required Experience & Skills

Professional experience working on grassroots community organizing initiatives related to local or statewide campaigns.
Experience with note-taking, summarizing meetings, and documenting key information clearly.
Knowledge of the Maine State Legislature and the lawmaking process in Maine.
Strong communication and graphic design skills (experience with Canva or similar tools preferred).
Ability to stay organized and manage multiple projects and priorities.
Valid Maine driver’s license and ability to travel statewide, including travel to Augusta during the legislative session.

Preferred Experience & Skills

Experience planning or supporting grassroots campaign events, such as advocacy days or lobby days at the Maine State House.
Strong interpersonal skills and comfort speaking with a broad range of audiences, including people with lived experience, community organizations, and policymakers.
Understanding of policy issues related to recovery, harm reduction, drug policy, and criminal justice reform, and how these issues intersect.
Ability to communicate policy issues at a high-level when engaging with lawmakers or policy stakeholders.

Compensation & Benefits

Compensation: $25- $30/hour
