PURPOSE:
School counselors are members of the education leadership team and serve a vital role in maximizing student success.Through advocacy and collaboration, the school counselor promotes equity and access to opportunities and educational experiences that develop strategies for academic achievement, managing emotions and developing interpersonal skills, and making plans for career and college.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:
- School counseling theory and practice, including comprehensive school counseling programs.
- Social-emotional learning (SEL) frameworks and evidence-based interventions.
- Individual and group counseling techniques appropriate for young children.
- Trauma-informed practices and the effects of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs).
- Mental health awareness, including recognizing warning signs of anxiety, depression, grief, abuse, and behavioral disorders.
- Crisis prevention and response, including suicide risk assessment protocols, threat assessment procedures, and post-crisis support.
- Educational systems, curriculum, instructional practices, and academic interventions.
- Special education laws and processes, including Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, and student support teams.
- Federal and state education laws, including student confidentiality (Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA)) and mandatory reporting requirements.
- Multicultural counseling and culturally responsive practices.
- College and career awareness appropriate for elementary students.
- Data-informed decision making and program evaluation.
- Demonstrated skill in providing individual, group, and classroom counseling; assessing student needs; crisis intervention; conflict resolution; consultation and collaboration with students, families, staff, and community agencies;
- Effective verbal and written communication; program planning and organization; data analysis; and maintaining confidential records.
- Ability to build positive relationships with young children, promote equitable student outcomes, respond effectively in crisis situations, advocate for students, exercise sound professional judgment, manage multiple priorities, and lead a comprehensive school counseling program that supports students' academic, social-emotional, and career development.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
A Masters Degree, and meet the Maine Department of Education’s requirements for obtaining a School Counselor certification or conditional certificate.
A highly qualified elementary school counselor demonstrates:
- Knowledge of child development, counseling theories, educational systems, and relevant laws;
- Skill in counseling, collaboration, communication, assessment, and data analysis;
- Ability to foster positive student development, support academic achievement, respond effectively to crises, and build partnerships with families, educators, and community agencies while implementing a comprehensive school counseling program.
