Job Summary:
Reporting to the Engineer in Charge of the Central Steam Plant, Colby seeks applicants for a Steam Plant Mechanic at the Central Steam Plant. The mechanic will be responsible for maintaining and repairing conveyors, rotating equipment, hydraulics, auger conveyors and controls, fans, pumps, and similar equipment that support the operation of the Central Steam Plant. The mechanic must work in a positive, cooperative manner with other departmental personnel and the Colby community. The position requires prior experience with maintaining industrial equipment. Standard working hours for this position are Monday through Friday, 40 hours per week. This position may infrequently cover 12-hour High-Pressure Boiler Operator shifts based on operational needs.

- Perform all work in a prompt, neat, and careful manner that displays common sense, planning, and thoughtfulness
- Maintain tools, equipment, and mechanical areas in a neat and clean condition
- Maintain and repair conveyors, rotating equipment, hydraulics, auger conveyors and controls, fans, pumps, and similar equipment
- Perform preventive maintenance and repairs on wood- and gas-fired boilers and all supporting equipment
- Work in a positive, cooperative manner with other departmental personnel and the Colby community
- Notify and/or obtain advice from the Engineer in Charge or call for assistance as may be appropriate in any situation
- Assist with ensuring contractors follow safety rules and quality standards
- Assist with vendor and contractor communications and coordination
- Complete work safely in accordance with local, state, and federal regulations
- Perform additional duties as assigned; duties, responsibilities, and activities may change at any time with or without notice
Position Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Ability to maintain and service the mechanical equipment and systems used in high-pressure wood- and gas-fired steam plants.
- Ability to maintain and repair conveyors, rotating equipment, hydraulics, auger conveyors, gas burners and controls, fans, pumps, and similar equipment.
- Must be able to work independently, exercise judgment, and manage projects with minimal supervision, as well as to adjust as new projects are assigned.
- Ability to make an impact through work as a member of a team and diverse community.
- Basic computer skills such as email, Word, and Excel
- Maine State High Pressure Boiler Operator License preferred. We are prepared to provide on-the-job training and sponsor required schooling/licensing for the right candidate who demonstrates the right attitude and drive.
Preferred Qualifications or Skills:
- 1-3 years of experience maintaining bulk material conveyors
- 1-3 years of experience maintaining biomass or other solid fuel boilers

- Vision requirements for this position include the ability to see clearly at close and far distances and to adjust focus as needed.
- The work environment is dynamic and engaging, often involving multiple tasks and projects that require shifting focus and strong organizational skills.
- The noise level is generally moderate; however, there may be occasional moments of louder sounds depending on campus activity.
