About the Position:
The Business Manager I role oversees the General Processing team within the Accounting Unit by setting priorities, supervising staff, and providing guidance to ensure efficient operations. It manages daily deposits, accounts receivable (A/R), and accounts payable (A/P) processes while overseeing additional responsibilities based on operational needs. The role monitors workflow, identifies opportunities for process improvements, collaborates with leadership to implement enhancements, and serves as a subject matter expert for resolving operational issues relating to their team. The position also maintains knowledge of applicable laws, regulations, policies, and accounting standards, including SAAM, GAAP, GASB standards, and Office of the State Controller (OSC) guidance, to ensure compliance and accurate financial operations.

In This Role, You Will:
Support the General Processing team in maintaining a consistent, stable level of processing, assisting with daily operations and helping prevent backlogs.
Maintain regular communication with the Managing Staff Accountant and Accounting Unit leadership through check-ins, team huddles, and ongoing collaboration.
Supervise and support direct reports by monitoring performance, providing coaching, and helping ensure work meets Accounting Unit expectations.
Serve as a subject matter expert for General Processing functions, including accounts payable, billing, deposits, DocuWare, BIE entry, and other operational processes.
Provide customer service and operational support to internal and external stakeholders, serving as a point of contact for General Processing inquiries, and work to empower stakeholders to troubleshoot and resolve challenges independently where possible.
Evaluate workflows, identify risks and opportunities for improvement, and collaborate with stakeholders and the team to implement process enhancements.
Preference will be given to candidates who bring digital fluency and a process-improvement mindset:
Comfort learning and adopting new technologies, experience streamlining or digitizing paper-based work, clear written communication, curiosity about emerging workplace tools, and the judgment to evaluate and verify their output before relying on it.
Supervisory experience in accounting or business operations.
Experience with accounts payable, accounts receivable, deposits, or financial processing.
Experience improving workflows and processes.
Knowledge of accounting principles and financial regulations.
Strong organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills.
Minimum Qualifications:
(Entry level knowledges, skills, and/or abilities may be acquired through, BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO the following coursework/training and/or experience).
Education, training, and/or experience in Business/Public Administration, Accounting, Economics, or another related field demonstrating competency in coordinating business operations, reviewing and maintaining records, and acting in a leadership capacity.
