POSITION SUMMARY
The Yard Specialist is a key member of the Handy Boat Service yard team, responsible for the preparation, maintenance, and appearance of member and customer vessels throughout the haul-out, storage, and launch cycle. This full-time role supports all aspects of boat care from bottom prep and antifouling paint application to topsides detailing and general yard operations. The ideal candidate is reliable, detail-oriented, and takes pride in delivering quality workmanship on boats that our members trust us to care for.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Perform bottom prep including sanding, scraping, and surface preparation for antifouling paint systems
Apply antifouling and barrier coat paint systems according to product specifications and quality standards
Buff, compound, and wax topsides; clean and detail decks, cockpits, and interior as assigned
Conduct general boat detailing including vinyl care, metal polishing, and canvas cleaning
Support haul-out and launch operations, including vessel blocking, jack stands, and cradle placement under supervisor direction
Operate pressure washers, sanders, buffers, and other power and hand tools safely and effectively
Complete time cards digitally in an accurate and timely manner
Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment in all yard areas
Perform all work in accordance with established quality standards, safety procedures, and EPA/OSHA regulations
Assist other departments as needed; perform related duties as assigned or as the situation dictates per supervisor(s)
Work both independently and within a team environment across all seasons and conditions
Maintain courteous and professional relationships with members, customers, and fellow staff
Participate in yard organization, including moving boats, operating forklifts or travel lifts (training provided), and maintaining equipment as directed
LANDSCAPING & PROPERTY MAINTENANCE
Mow, edge, and maintain lawn areas throughout the boatyard and marina property
Perform seasonal plantings, mulching, weeding, and bed maintenance in landscaped areas
Maintain clean and presentable grounds including parking areas, walkways, docks, and common areas
Remove snow, sand, and ice from walkways, ramps, and critical access areas as needed
Pick up litter, debris, and yard waste on a regular basis to maintain a professional appearance
Support seasonal property prep including spring opening and fall winterization of grounds
Assist with minor property maintenance tasks such as painting fences, staining docks, and basic repairs
Operate grounds equipment including mowers, blowers, trimmers, and hand tools safely
Report any property damage, safety hazards, or maintenance needs to the supervisor promptly
QUALIFICATIONS
Prior experience in marine, automotive, painting, or related trade preferred but not required—we will train the right candidate
Ability to follow written and verbal instructions and work accurately without direct supervision
Strong attention to detail and pride in quality workmanship
Ability to conduct quality assessment checks and evaluate recorded performance
Reliable, punctual, and committed to showing up as part of a small, close-knit team
Clean driving record and valid Driver’s License required
Forklift or travel lift operation experience is a plus (training available)
