HeyTutor has partnered with a school district in Bangor, Maine to provide high-impact, in-person academic and special education support to students. We are looking for exceptional Para/Tutors who are passionate about helping students overcome academic challenges and reach their full potential.
In this role, you will provide 1:1 tutoring for approximately 2 hours per day using our provided curriculum. You will also spend approximately 4 hours per day supporting a K–5 special education classroom, working alongside school staff to provide meaningful academic and behavioral support to students.
You must be comfortable passing an IN-PERSON background check.

JOB DESCRIPTION:
As a Tutor/Paraeducator, you will provide a combination of 1:1 academic tutoring and special education classroom support. You will work closely with teachers and school staff to support students' individual academic, behavioral, and developmental needs.
Approximately 2 hours per day will be dedicated to providing 1:1 tutoring to an 8th-grade student currently performing at a 2nd–3rd grade academic level, using HeyTutor's provided curriculum. The remaining time will be spent supporting a K–5 special education classroom, assisting students and teachers across a variety of classroom activities and settings.
Tutoring responsibilities may include:
- Provide 1:1 academic instruction using HeyTutor's provided curriculum.
- Deliver instruction and practice activities aligned with the student's individual academic needs and skill level.
- Provide appropriate accommodations, modifications, and support to help the student access instructional content.
- Monitor student progress and communicate observations and relevant updates to the appropriate school staff.
- Encourage student engagement, confidence, independence, and academic growth.
- Adjust instructional approaches and provide additional support as needed based on student response and progress.
Paraeducator and classroom support responsibilities may include:
- Carry out instructional programs and activities designated by the teacher.
- Provide assistance with individualized instructional materials and classroom activities.
- Assist teachers with developing and maintaining classroom schedules and routines.
- Assist with collecting, observing, recording, and charting functional behavior data and taking anecdotal notes on targeted student behaviors.
- Assist in preparing and organizing instructional materials for special education teachers.
- Make informed decisions with the teacher regarding content-specific accommodations, modifications, and adaptations.
- Maintain high expectations for students while providing as little prompting as possible to encourage independence.
- Assist teachers with behavior management and support students in developing appropriate behaviors.
- Facilitate peer support, friendships, and positive relationships among students.
- Supervise students during non-instructional periods, as specified in IEP documents.
- Partner with teachers and other service providers, including Speech & Language Pathologists, School Psychologists, and Occupational Therapists.
- Provide bathroom assistance and diapering support, as needed.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the special education teacher or appropriate school staff.
SCHEDULE:
Monday-Friday / 6 hours per day (during school hours).
REQUIREMENTS:
- Possession of a valid Maine Department of Education Tech Certification at Level 3 is required.
- Prior experience working with students; candidates should be comfortable and confident working with children.
- Comfortable working in a classroom setting and supporting students with special needs.
- Clear FBI/DOJ background check (provided through HeyTutor).
- Comfortable providing bathroom assistance and changing diapers, as needed.
- Must be able to provide a reference from a previous employer.
- Must be able to successfully complete de-escalation and safety training provided by the school district.
PAY: $25-$35/hour
Pay depends on a combination of education and experience.
