The Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry’s Land Use Planning Commission announces a limited period Mapping and Graphic Arts Specialist II vacancy. This position is funded through June 8, 2025.
AGENCY INFORMATION: The Land Use Planning Commission is a 9-member, citizen board that governs land use planning, zoning, and permitting in the portions of Maine that are unorganized or de-organized, areas covering approximately 10.4 million acres. The staff is responsible for planning, permitting, compliance, and administrative functions, operating out of five regional offices and one central office in Augusta.
BRIEF JOB DESCRIPTION: This position involves advanced technical services work in cartography and graphic arts. Duties include creating and revising maps, and designing, creating, revising, and providing technical advice and support on graphic arts for use in publications, websites, presentations, and other graphic applications. The Mapping and Graphic Arts Specialist II will complete complex projects with multiple and diverse components requiring in-depth research and provide functional direction to lower-level or contract employees on a project basis.
PREFERRED SKILLS, ABILITIES, AND KNOWLEDGE:
- Knowledge of modern cartography principles, practices and techniques.
- Knowledge of modern photogrammetry techniques.
- Knowledge of automated mapping and Geographic Information System operating requirements and components, such as ArcPro and AGOL.
- Knowledge of mapping information sources, geographic information sources, and commercial maps and map products.
- Knowledge of graphic arts designing methods, techniques, and software.
- Ability to coordinate complex projects with multiple and diverse components.
- Ability to oversee the work of others.
- Ability to perform cartographic and geographic research, and to evaluate and resolve conflicting information from various sources.
- Ability to create artistic graphics, illustrations, and materials manually and using computerized graphic aids.
- Ability to accurately create and revise maps manually and using computerized mapping aids.
- Ability to communicate effectively.
- Ability to write clearly and effectively.
- Ability to evaluate new graphic art and cartographic aids.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: A four year combination of education and/or experience in cartography and graphic arts.
