JOB SUMMARY AND SCOPE
Position Summary: Performs a variety of departmental activities including receiving, stocking, supply distribution, inventory management, quality improvement and customer service and other activities as requested by the Materials Manager.
Basic Function: Receives, stocks, and disburses supplies on a timely basis and maintains departmental inventory. Under the supervision of the Materials Manager, the courier transports patient specimens, mail, supplies, and other materials as needed from medical centers to and from Down East Community Hospital.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Receive and verify packing slips to purchase orders
- If needed, process and place purchase orders.
- Reviews department inventory levels for expiration dates, quality of products, organization and notifying buyer of low inventory.
- Reviews par levels for departments and coordinates stock replacement.
- Disburses supplies to departments.
- Prepares charge items for disbursement to departments- including checking bar codes and manufacturing information in cerner.
- Displays required level of computer knowledge for purchasing routines.
- Displays appropriate product knowledge.
- Plans daily workload according to priorities and organizes to accomplish daily duties.
- Assist with year end physical inventory count.
- Provides exceptional customer service to all departments and vendors.
- Picks-up, sorts, and delivers biological specimens and supplies, including interoffice and US mail, to appropriate destinations.
- Follows established safety practices including biohazards, exposure control plan (blood-borne pathogens), infection control to include universal precautions, employee right to know (hazardous chemicals), and chemical hygiene standards.
- Promotes effective working relationships and works effectively as part of a department / unit / team inter and intra departmentally to facilitate the department/unit’s ability to meet its goals and objectives.
- Seeks out needed information by staying informed and involved by attending meetings, reading memos, policies, meeting minutes, newsletters, email and other appropriate information in a timely manner.
- Reliable attendance and punctuality, including observing appropriate break times and extending a scheduled shift when necessary to meet patient demands.
- Performs duties in a safe manner, in compliance with all safety policies and procedures.
- Complies with the Code of Conduct and all appropriate policies and procedures.

Requirements:
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
- High School Diploma or equivalent with adequate math skills.
- Computer and typing skills.
- This position requires working outdoors with freight trucks in all types of weather.
- This position requires the lifting of up to 35 lbs., pushing and pulling of 100 lbs.
- Must possess a valid Maine State driver’s license with an excellent driving record.
- Ability to drive for extended periods of time, in all weather climates.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality as mandated by HIPAA and Maine State Law.
- Ability to work independently.
PHYSICAL EFFORT AND ENVIRONMENT
Active: Often lifts up to 35 lbs. pounds independently. Frequently pushes/pulls 100 pounds. Stands or walks most of the time.

Exposure Category II: Employee reasonably expected to be at some risk for exposure to blood borne pathogens.
QUALITY IMPROVEMENT
- Maintains current knowledge of the hospital-wide Quality Improvement Program.
- Collaborates with management to improve the effectiveness of the department through the Quality Improvement plans and processes.
- Participates in the departmental and hospital-wide Quality Improvement activities as directed by the manager.
