This position does not require a professional license, does not have supervisory duties, and does not require working on holidays.
This position is dispatched from the surveyor’s home to medical facilities and residential facilities for Individuals with Intellectual Disabilities statewide and does require statewide travel and occasional overnight hotel stays. Occasionally, early morning, nights or weekends may be required.

If you’d like to feel this way about how you earn your living, we are looking for a dedicated person with experience in structural, environmental, and physical plant conditions in a healthcare setting, and perhaps also some experience, knowledge or education regarding program oversight of a residential facility for individuals with intellectual disabilities. We seek someone who thrives in a team environment, yet works well independently, to support the Department of Health and Human Service’s mission to promote health and safety for all Maine people
What can you expect to do as a Surveyor?
• Work as part of a team of surveyors conducting licensing inspections and investigating complaints about services given to patients of hospitals, hospice facilities, ambulatory surgical centers (aka “day surgery centers”), dialysis centers, and rural health centers, and residential facilities for individuals with intellectual disabilities;
• Complete reports, known as “Statements of Deficiencies;”
• Interview complainants and witnesses to obtain information regarding allegations of regulatory noncompliance;
• Participate in training, including mandatory on-line training required by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (“CMS”);
• Ensure these providers are complying with both federal and State licensing requirements; and
• Provide technical assistance to providers to clarify regulations.
Please NOTE: Initial and on-going training is extensive, and participation and passage of all required courses is mandatory.
Minimum Qualifications: (Entry level knowledge, skills, and/or abilities may be acquired through, BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO the following coursework/training and/or experience.)
A four (4) year combination of training and experience in public health sanitation, biology, or related field.
Preferred candidates will ALSO have:
• Knowledge of federal and Maine regulatory requirements for the types of healthcare facilities listed above;
• Experience working in any one or more of the types of providers listed above;
• Demonstrated critical thinking skills;
• Demonstrated excellent ability to write concisely, clearly, and with correct grammar, spelling, punctuation, and sentence structure;
• Demonstrated ability to communicate politely, professionally, and effectively in writing and verbally;
• Demonstrated experience working productively and professionally both on your own and with a team;
• Demonstrated ability to maintain objectivity and professionalism during occasional unusual and stressful circumstances;
• Demonstrated ability to draw valid conclusions and make independent decisions;
• A valid Maine driver’s license; and
• Reliable transportation.
