Hi folks! I've got a very exciting but very niche job offer: I am a traveling alpaca shearer based in Scarborough, ME and I'm currently hiring an assistant/apprentice for this shearing season. My assistant last year was incredible, but decided to take a full time position at an ag school so he will be unable to return.

Appalachian Custom Shearing is a traveling shearing business which services 550+ farms in 20 states throughout the east coast and Appalachia. We specialize in shearing alpacas and llamas, but also work with sheep, goats, yaks, and camels.

I'm looking for an assistant to hit the road with me beginning in late February and going through the end of June. We travel to 20 states and visit 500+ farms on the east coast and Appalachia. Pay is based on number of animals and number of stops every day, but projected pay is ~$25k for the 4 month season. All food, lodging, and travel is included.

Applicant must be able to easily lift 100 lbs (as most animals we work with weigh 200 lbs maximum) and be tall enough to be able to reach over the back of an animal. Experience with large livestock is preferred, but not necessarily required. Being comfortable working with large livestock is required, as well as working long days and sleeping in hotels.

This job would be great for a recent high school or college grad who is interested in farming and wants hands on experience in a niche field! For the right person, this can translate to a multi year apprenticeship working towards a head shearer position with me.

As we are traveling together an sharing a two bed hotel room every night, the ideal candidate would be male, 18-35, strong, with a tough work ethic.
