Skills
I take pride in doing solid work, whether that’s organizing a project, supporting a team, or making sure the little things get done right. I don't overpromise or pretend I know things I don’t, but I do take learning seriously and get up to speed quickly. I have construction and wilderness skills, that would be relevant to the job. I also skill communicator and love teaching and leading groups as well as working, hardest part of a team. I grew up bailing hay as a kid during the Mississippi Summers. I know what it means to work hard physically, outdoors, as part of a team and in-service of a larger project.
About
TO whom it may concern:
I am applying for the Maintenance Trail Worker position with the National Park Service because this is the kind of work I’m ready to commit to fully. I have spent my life on trails—hiking them, running them, and working to maintain them. This position would allow me to apply my skills, endurance, and respect for public lands in a way that benefits others, and I would take that responsibility seriously.
I have direct experience in trail construction, having worked with a National Park Ranger to design and lead the building of a 100-foot wooden bridge on the Natchez Trace. That experience, combined with my time as a Pacific Crest Trail thru-hiker, has given me a deep understanding of both the labor required to build and maintain trails and the value they provide to those who rely on them. I have also worked in physically demanding roles, from home renovation to logistics management, and I am comfortable with tools, outdoor labor, and remote working conditions. This job represents both a professional and personal goal for me.
I mentioned this with complete earnestness, I've dreamed since I was in the 3rd grade (state learning about state geography) about living in Maine. So the opportunity to work outdoors in its forests and mountains—preserving and improving the trails that allow others to experience its wilderness—is something I would approach with dedication and seriousness.
If there is still an opportunity to be considered, I would welcome the chance to speak further. Thank you for your consideration for the opportunity to join the trail, maintenance teams. - Stephen Russell
