The Ark (formerly Pilgrim’s Inn) is an independently owned inn on Deer Isle, Maine. The property includes a main house, three cottages, gardens, and waterfront land overlooking the Mill Pond. While the inn has deep roots on the island, we are also actively shaping what it can become—through thoughtful improvements, creative projects, and a strong connection to design, hospitality, and place.
We are looking for a Design & Maintenance Assistant to help care for and improve the property. This is a hands-on role for someone who enjoys working with tools, solving practical problems, and helping shape an environment through repairs, upkeep, and small building projects. It’s a good fit for someone who wants to keep learning, build real skills, and take pride in work that guests experience every day.
WHAT YOU’LL DO:
– Handle routine maintenance and small repairs across guest rooms, cottages, and shared spaces
– Take on basic plumbing tasks such as fixing leaks, replacing fixtures, and troubleshooting simple issues
– Take on basic electrical tasks such as replacing outlets, switches, and light fixtures
– Help with painting, installations, touch-ups, and seasonal property upkeep
– Build or modify small furnishings, shelving, signage, and other practical elements around the property
– Support ongoing improvement projects with the innkeepers
– Keep tools, materials, and work areas organized
WHO THIS IS FOR:
– Someone with hands-on experience in maintenance, carpentry, fabrication, or related work
– Comfortable using power tools and hand tools safely and effectively
– Familiar with plumbing and electrical basics
– Reliable, organized, and able to work independently
– Someone who notices details and cares how a place looks, feels, and functions
– Interested in learning, growing, and taking on more responsibility over time
BONUS IF YOU HAVE:
– Photos or examples of past projects
– Experience with finishes, hardware, furniture, or custom built elements
– Interest in design, materials, or hospitality environments
– Familiarity with Deer Isle or interest in being part of the island community

Season: approximately May–October
Schedule: full-time seasonal
