Join an Award-Winning Team
The Maine Rural Water Association (MRWA) has been recognized as one of the Best Places to Work for five consecutive years. We are a mission-driven nonprofit dedicated to strengthening Maine’s water and wastewater utilities through training, technical assistance, and advocacy.
We are seeking an experienced Wastewater Circuit Rider to provide hands-on support to small and rural wastewater systems across the state.
This is not a desk job. It is a field-based, relationship-driven, independent technical role.
Position Summary
The Wastewater Circuit Rider provides on-site operational troubleshooting, regulatory guidance, and training to Maine’s wastewater treatment facilities and collection systems.
This is a full-time, salaried position requiring extensive statewide travel and the ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
You will often be the only MRWA representative on-site. Success in this role requires confidence working alone, solving problems in real time, and building trust with operators and municipal leaders.

- Provide on-site troubleshooting and operational guidance
- Assist systems in meeting regulatory compliance requirements (NPDES, monitoring, reporting)
- Evaluate plant performance and recommend improvements
- Promote preventative maintenance and operational efficiency

Training & Outreach
- Conduct hands-on and classroom training
- Serve as a trusted technical resource to wastewater professionals
- Attend National Rural Water Association conferences twice annually for training
Documentation & Reporting
- Maintain accurate records of site visits and assistance provided
- Prepare clear written summaries and recommendations
- Meet program deliverables and reporting expectations

- Are patient when explaining technical concepts
- Listen first and speak thoughtfully
- Enjoy helping others solve problems
- Can walk into a facility, assess the situation, and methodically work toward solutions

This may not be the right fit if you:
- Prefer highly structured, closely supervised work environments
- Need daily direction or frequent feedback to stay on task
- Become easily frustrated when others learn at a slower pace
- Prefer working primarily in an office setting
This role requires maturity, patience, strong judgment, and the ability to represent the Association with credibility and professionalism.
