Position: Stewardship Coordinator
Employers: Chebeague & Cumberland Land Trust (CCLT) and Freeport Conservation Trust (FCT)
Reports to: CCLT and FCT Executive Directors
Position Type: Full-time salaried position at CCLT with FCT contracting for 50% of the Stewardship Coordinator’s time
Salary: Base salary $44,000, health stipend $6,000, 4 weeks Paid Time Off, 12 Paid Holidays
Communities Served: Chebeague Island, Cumberland, and Freeport, Maine. (Offices in Cumberland and Freeport)
About CCLT:The Chebeague & Cumberland Land Trust is a nationally accredited land trust with a mission to permanently conserve and steward natural resources across our Island and mainland communities for current and future generations. Since our founding in 1987, we have completed 35 conservation projects, protecting over 1,250 acres of valuable open space and habitat, working landscapes, and recreational areas with 25 miles of trails in our two communities.
About FCT: Freeport Conservation Trust is a grass-roots land trust dedicated to sharing Freeport’s special natural places, valued for recreation, wildlife habitat, clean water, farming, forestry and scenic beauty. Since 1977, our volunteers and staff have partnered with landowners, neighbors, local businesses, the Town of Freeport, and other groups to conserve and connect more than 1,700 acres of open space and nearly 20 miles of public trails. Position Summary: The Stewardship Coordinator is responsible for the stewardship and management of the fee-owned and easement properties in the care of our Trust(s). This position involves a blend of fieldwork and office work and requires the employee to perform tasks independently and without supervision. The Stewardship Coordinator must be able to communicate clearly and consistently and excel at developing positive working relationships with landowners, volunteers, and other local stakeholders.
Duties include (but are not limited to):
Field work on conserved properties including: coordinate/conduct annual monitoring visits; natural resource inventories for new properties, plan and construct recreational trails; assess and address property maintenance needs; invasive species management, signage installation
Communication with property owners regarding monitoring, maintenance, and approval requests
Recruit, train, and coordinate volunteers of various ages and abilities; engage with members of the community; and plan and lead work projects with volunteers
Write and maintain organized and detailed property records and documents, including baseline documents and management plans, and ensure property monitoring reports are completed on time
Assist with land acquisition projects, including site visits, due diligence, record keeping, and mapping
Maintain stewardship tools and equipment, property signs, and trail and boundary markers
Lead and participate in recurring Stewardship Committee meetings, and other relevant community meetings as appropriate; help develop annual stewardship budget and work plan
Work with the Outreach Coordinators to deliver educational programs on Trust properties on various topics and for variety of audiences
Assist with the hiring and managing of seasonal interns
Essential Skills, Knowledge, Abilities
Education and/or experience in natural resource management, land stewardship, ecology, forestry, environmental studies, environmental policy, or similar fields.
Self-motivated professional with a demonstrated skill in managing multiple projects and consistently hitting deadlines.
Stewardship skills that include trail layout, design, building trails, routine trail maintenance, using power tools and other equipment to build bog bridges, kiosks etc, invasive plant removal and native plant installation.
Strong speaking, writing, and listening skills. Comfortable speaking in public to a group or conversing with individuals to build relationships and strengthen collaborations.
Competency with technology including: phone-based GPS apps, ESRI ArcMap or similar software for mapping and analysis, Microsoft Office Suite, and Google Workspace.
Knowledge of or demonstrated ability to learn plant, animal, and natural community identification.
Practical problem-solving and organizational skills with attention to detail and record-keeping.
Comfortable working in outdoor settings with the ability to hike on rough terrain in adverse conditions and carry equipment and materials.
Valid Driver’s License in good standing and access to a reliable automobile.
Willingness to work occasional evenings and weekends and to take on work outside of the immediate job description when in the best interest of the Trust(s).
