Job Description
Reports To: Superintendent of Schools
Supervises: Elementary Staff (PK–4)
Qualifications - Education & Certification:
- Maine Department of Education certification as a Building Administrator (040) or equivalent State of Maine Administrator Certificate.
- Minimum of a Master’s Degree in Education or Educational Leadership.
- Significant elementary classroom teaching experience.
- Special Knowledge & Skills:
- Proven success in an educational leadership role.
- Deep working knowledge of elementary curriculum, professional development, and assessment strategies.
- Exceptional communication and collaboration skills with staff, parents, and community partners.
- Proficiency in staff supervision, mentorship, and performance evaluation.
Job Goal
To utilize leadership, supervisory, and administrative expertise to develop and maintain an exemplary educational program that supports the mission, vision, and strategic goals of the RSU #63 School Department.
Performance Responsibilities
- Administrative & Organizational Management
- Plan, organize, and direct the implementation of all school activities and instructional programs.
- Oversee school administration; provide recommendations to the Central Office or School Board when authorization is required.
- Collaborate with the District Leadership Team on systemic issues including curriculum, special services, and transportation.
- Design school schedules and class assignments to optimize student instructional needs.
- Maintain high standards of student conduct and enforce fair, consistent discipline while ensuring due process for all students.
- Supervise the maintenance of accurate records regarding student progress and attendance.
- Facilitate regular staff meetings to ensure effective school operations.
- Coordinate fire drills and emergency preparedness programs in compliance with legal requirements and district procedures.
- Delegate authority to appropriate personnel to ensure continuity of leadership in the Principal’s absence.
- Financial & Facility Management
- Prepare and submit annual budgetary requests and monitor the expenditure of allotted funds.
- Oversee the safety, administration, and daily use of the school plant for academic and community purposes.
- Maintain accurate building records, reports, and internal accounting for student activity accounts.
- Conduct regular inventories of school property and ensure the security of district assets.
- Collaborate with maintenance and custodial staff to proactively address facility needs.
- Educational Leadership & Curriculum
- Lead the development, revision, and evaluation of school curriculum and assessment practices.
- Foster a school climate that prioritizes high-quality teaching and student engagement.
- Supervise student support services and guidance programs to enhance individual student development.
- Stay current on educational trends and research by attending professional conferences and engaging with peer networks.
- Serve as an active member of the District Leadership Team, contributing to district-wide decision-making and strategic planning.
- Personnel Management & Professional Development
- Lead the recruiting, screening, hiring, and orientation of school building personnel.
- Supervise and evaluate all administrative, certified, and support staff.
- Provide ongoing coaching and counseling to staff to improve performance; recommend dismissal or non-renewal when necessary according to established procedures.
- Design and implement in-service training and professional development opportunities for staff.
- Community & Stakeholder Relations
- Act as the primary liaison between the school and the community, interpreting district policies and encouraging family participation.
- Maintain a visible and active presence at school-sponsored activities and events that celebrate student achievement.
- Establish strong relationships with local community groups to foster support for school objectives.
- Develop and execute a consistent plan for communicating with parents and guardians.

As defined by the individual Contract of Employment.
Evaluation
Performance will be evaluated by the Superintendent of Schools based on the successful management of the responsibilities outlined above, as well as the attainment of yearly action plans and job goals. All employees are expected to perform duties diligently, professionally, and in compliance with RSU #63 policies and state/federal laws.
