Diesel Technician is responsible for diagnosing, maintaining, and repairing a wide range of agricultural, construction, lawn care, and commercial equipment.
This position works on tractors, skid steers, compact track loaders, excavators, mowers, attachments, diesel and gasoline engines, hydraulic systems, electrical systems, drivetrains, and emissions systems. The primary focus is completing accurate and efficient maintenance and repairs while protecting customer equipment and maintaining a high standard of workmanship.
The Diesel Technician is also responsible for completing warranty repairs in accordance with manufacturer procedures and documentation requirements.
This is primarily a shop-based position. Field service is not a regular responsibility; however, the technician may occasionally be asked to assist with an off-site diagnosis or repair when business or customer needs require it.
During busy periods, the Diesel Technician may also assist with equipment setup and pre-delivery inspections. These responsibilities are secondary to the position’s primary focus on maintenance, diagnostics, and repair.
Primary Responsibilities
Equipment Maintenance & Repair
- Perform scheduled maintenance and inspections on agricultural, construction, lawn care, and commercial equipment.
- Diagnose and repair mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, electronic, fuel, cooling, and emissions-related problems.
- Repair diesel and gasoline engines, drivetrains, steering systems, brakes, attachments, and related components.
- Use manufacturer service information, diagnostic software, wiring diagrams, hydraulic schematics, and technical resources to identify equipment problems.
- Complete repairs accurately and efficiently while following manufacturer specifications and accepted repair practices.
- Test equipment after repairs to confirm that concerns have been corrected and the equipment operates properly.
- Identify additional repair or maintenance needs and communicate findings before performing work outside the approved scope.
- Perform warranty repairs in accordance with manufacturer policies and procedures.
- Assist with equipment setup and pre-delivery inspections when additional shop support is required.
- Occasionally assist with off-site diagnosis or repairs when requested.
Work Orders & Documentation
- Review work orders and customer concerns before beginning repairs.
- Record accurate labor time for each repair or maintenance task.
- Document diagnostic steps, test results, repairs performed, and parts used.
- Clearly document additional concerns or recommended repairs discovered during inspection.
- Communicate with the Parts & Service Advisor when additional work, parts, or customer authorization is needed.
- Provide complete and accurate documentation required for warranty claims.
- Submit completed work orders promptly for review and processing.
- Notify the Parts & Service Advisor of delays, backordered parts, or changes that may affect the expected completion date.
Shop Operations
- Maintain a clean, safe, and organized work area.
- Properly store tools, equipment, fluids, parts, and shop supplies.
- Care for dealership tools, diagnostic equipment, and shop property.
- Protect customer equipment from unnecessary damage, dirt, or exposure while it is in the dealership’s care.
- Follow established procedures for handling fluids, batteries, hazardous materials, and waste products.
- Assist with unloading, moving, and positioning equipment when necessary.
- Help maintain shared shop areas and equipment.
- Assist other technicians and departments when business needs require.
- Perform additional duties that contribute to the success of the dealership.

Union Farm Equipment will provide specialty tools, diagnostic equipment, and manufacturer-specific resources required to perform authorized repairs. Technicians are expected to properly maintain and protect both personal and dealership-owned tools.
Safety & Physical Expectations
The Diesel Technician must be able to safely perform the physical requirements of the position, including:
- Standing, walking, bending, kneeling, crouching, and climbing throughout the workday.
- Working under, around, and inside equipment.
- Using hand tools, power tools, diagnostic equipment, and lifting equipment.
- Lifting, carrying, pushing, or positioning parts and components safely.
- Operating tractors, excavators, skid steers, mowers, and other dealership equipment as required for diagnosis and testing.
- Working in a shop environment that may include noise, dust, oils, fuels, exhaust, and changing temperatures.
- Occasionally working outside or away from the dealership when business needs require it.
- Wearing required personal protective equipment and following all dealership safety procedures.
Employees should request assistance or use proper lifting equipment when a component cannot be moved safely by one person.
