Performs Rockwell Hardness Tests on metal to determine tensile strength and degree of hardness. Uses precision measuring equipment such as micrometers, Cadillac gages, height gages, dial indicators, surface plates, gage blocks, sine bars and plates, super micrometers, optical comparators, etc.
Must have a sense of precision machining and a constant awareness of the influence of cleanliness, rigidity, trueness, and alignment of workpiece and equipment during all set-up and machining operations. Is capable of using taper attachments, rotary tables, grinding attachments, etc.; and is familiar with machine accessories. Will know, at all times, the type of metal, condition, hardness, tolerances, finish heat treat requirements, etc. of individual workpieces.
Must be constantly aware of squareness of workpiece during machining operations. Sets up index head and determines correct hole plate, circle, and appropriate number of turns for required division of circle. Machines angles to minutes, degree, and second tolerances. May works to tolerances of plus or minus one ten thousandths of an inch (.0001). Indicates workpieces, vises, universal heads and tables, fixtures, etc. to insure alignment. May use edge finder, dial indicators, magnetic base holders, etc.
Converts from decimals to metrics and vice versa.
Works closely with and sometimes assists Tool and Gage Maker #1. Consults supervision if in doubt to prevent damage to expensive cutters and personal injury. Practices safety and good housekeeping policies and procedures.
