Energetic, upbeat full-time Greater Portland resident who knows the local culture and zeitgeist up and down while maintaining a great appreciation for historical perspectives. Must be an exacting editor, grammarian, and speller, as well as a fearless, polished writer who can bait the hook. Must believe in print. Must have publication experience and be adept with email marketing and social media. Must enjoy picking up the phone or engaging in face-to-face contact with your sources and take snapshot photos as needed. Must be respectful of our critical deadlines. Must be an avid, careful, and curious reader. Must conform to activity reporting. To be an asset to our team, must value reliability and dependability as we do.
Responsibilities include research for stories, writing stories and departments, interviewing visiting celebrities performing in the area, ad hoc writing assignments, publicity for magazine, subscription outreach development, promoting our online archives on e platforms, liaison and assignment to freelance writers and other talent, copy-editing, improving online contact with our digital readers, writing promotional copy for creative material, sending out mass and individually targeted emails, responding to unforgiving deadlines with a smile. Familiarity with Creative Suite useful. Must have car and current driver’s license and be a resident of Greater Portland. Sense of humor essential. Must be an organized self-starter who works well with other departments in this prizewinning 40-year-old magazine.
Minimum education is a BA or BS.
Total 20 hours per week, generally 9:30-4:30 Monday, 9:30-4 Wednesday and Thursday You must also have your own remote office, computer, internet and phone service.
$20.50 to start with a 3-month trial period. Must provide writing clips and resume with cover letter illustrating your passion for Maine, Portland, and familiarity with Portland Monthly Magazine.
