The Androscoggin Valley Council of Governments(AVCOG) located in Auburn, Maine, a regional planning organization serving Androscoggin, Frankin and Northern Oxford Counties, is seeking to fill the role of Accountant. The position is a highly responsible administrative position providing the agency with accurate and timely accounting and bookkeeping support. This position is responsible for the accounts receivable, accounts payable, and payroll processes, among other accounting functions. The Accountant operates according to AVCOG policies, applicable local, state, and federal laws and regulations, and under the general guidance and direct supervision of the Finance Director.
Key Responsibilities
Accounts Receivable/Accounts Payable
- Prepare and send accurate invoices in a timely manner
- Record and reconcile cash receipts and loan payments
- Follow up on outstanding balances and ensure timely collection
- Generate monthly accounts receivable aging reports
- Verify, enter, and pay outstanding invoices
- Track and record credit card expenses, ensuring proper backup for all charges
- Reconcile AR and AP accounts monthly
Financial Reporting
- Prepare monthly journal entries
- Prepare program financial reports as needed
- Prepare quarterly financial and loan portfolio reporting
- Perform monthly closing procedures
- Reconcile bank statements and balance sheet accounts
Payroll
- Review and process bi-weekly time sheets for staff
- Process payroll
Annual Audit
- Support annual financial audit process
- Ensure compliance with financial standards
- Support program audits
Other
- Maintain fixed assets and depreciation schedule
- Other financial and administrative tasks upon request
Qualifications
- Bachelor degree in accounting from an accredited college or university
- Good interpersonal, written and oral communication skills
- Demonstrated careful attention to detail and accuracy in work
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel
- Demonstrated ability to work successfully as a part of a team
Desirable Qualifications
- Three (3) or more years of accounting experience, to include fund/cost accounting
- Or any equivalent combination of education and experience that demonstrates possession of the required knowledge, skills, and abilities
- Nonprofit, state, federal funding
Work Environment
Moderate physical effort required; normally seated or standing with freedom of movement on a regular basis; operating office equipment, and handling books and supplies. Extensive periods may be spent operating a computer. Use of hands and wrists in frequent repetitive motions. Interaction with others via face-to-face communication, telephone, email, and written correspondence. Flexibility of motion; ability to lift up to 10 pounds is required.
