Tax Examiner II at State of Maine
This position is assigned to Maine Revenue Services’ Income/Estate Tax Division, Business Tax Unit. Responsibilities require the ability to communicate and write clearly and effectively; comprehend federal and state tax law; use excellent math skills and knowledge of basic accounting principles; correctly apply laws, rules, and regulations; and deal effectively with taxpayers and their representatives in challenging situations. Work is performed under limited supervision.
TYPICAL DUTIES:
- Research and analyze proposed and enacted federal and state tax legislation
- Provide explanations of state tax laws, rules, and regulations to taxpayers and tax professionals via phone and in writing
- Develop and update tax forms, instructions, and guidance materials
- Collect, analyze, and report out statistical data
- Respond to reconsideration requests and requests for advisory rulings
- Provide training and guidance to new and/or less senior examiners
- Review and evaluate the accuracy of adjustments made by others
- Process tax returns, payments, and refund requests accurately and timely
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
A bachelor’s degree from an accredited educational institution; AND either one (1) year experience as a Tax Examiner, or one (1) year of work experience in accounting, tax collection, finance, or directly related computer science. Related work experience includes, but is not limited to, employment in a federal or state tax agency, public accounting, or debt collection with responsibility for providing taxpayer assistance, tax preparation, or debt collection. Equivalent experience may be substituted for education on a year-for-year basis. The individual must work in the Augusta, Maine office of Maine Revenue Services.
(Preference will be given to individuals with federal and Maine income tax and data analysis education and experience.)
