SECURITY OFFICER – NIGHTS AND WEEKENDS

Full-Time, Non-Exempt, Hourly, Staff Appointment
The security officer Is responsible for maintaining and ensuring safety and security services for students, faculty, staff, and visitors on College-owned and/or used properties. Through effective incident response, comprehensive building and campus property security, parking enforcement and other safety related services, the security officer supports and enforces College policies, and works effectively as a member of the campus security team. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Develop a thorough knowledge of all campus security posts, properties and geography.
- Conduct security patrols on foot and in security vehicles and at fixed positions, including crowd and event control as assigned.
- Independently and/or collaboratively with other officers and security staff, proactively respond to calls for service including but not limited to lock-outs, fire, mechanical and/or burglar alarms, alcohol violations, student code violations, escorts, parking violations, vandalism/graffiti complaints, motor vehicle accidents, noise disturbances, trespassing violations, etc.
- Deter, detect and report unsafe, suspicious or criminal activity
- Perform periodic inspections of systems and facilities such as alarms, street and outside lighting, building access systems, blue light kiosks etc to ensure proper function and prevent failure.
- Respond to medical emergencies, providing first aid as required and arranging resource response to campus including Colby CER, Waterville and other Fire Departments and private ambulance services.
- Provide medical and other transport services, in partnership with Colby jitney and shuttle services, including driving students to and from the Thayer health center, medical transports on campus and security escorts.
- Enforce College policies, submitting necessary paperwork as assigned.
- Actively participate in college events designed to foster the relationship between campus security and members of the Colby College community.
- Conduct initial investigations, gathering information by interviewing and obtaining statements from witnesses, victims and suspects, securing physical evidence and filing detailed reports using a computerized report system while maintaining appropriate confidentiality.
- Provide general information and specialized training for the College community such as crime prevention and fire safety, campus tours of Miller Library and secure areas and others as assigned.
- Participate in training, attending staff meetings and training sessions as assigned, including successful completion of various certification programs such as CPR.
- Provide crowd control functions at concerts, athletic, social, and special events
- Attend judicial and/or conduct procedures as required
- Effectively operate and maintain assigned equipment including, but not limited to; radios, uniforms, computers, body and other camera systems, and vehicles.
- Display exemplary customer service skills and ensure positive interactions with the community
- Perform additional duties as assigned; duties, responsibilities, and activities may change at any time with or without notice.
QUALIFICATIONS
- High school diploma or equivalent required; professional coursework or post-secondary education are a plus
- Additional training, certifications or related experience in personal defense training, First Aid and CPR, First Responders, Investigation, Conflict Resolution, Law Enforcement and Security Officers Training Academy preferred
- Must present a neat, clean, and professional image
- Well-developed public relations skills; be able to perform duties in a flexible, non-confrontational environment; work with members of a diverse community; and utilize diplomacy and tact in dealing with sensitive and confidential situations
- Effectively operate a variety of equipment including portable radios, body worn cameras, computers, closed circuit and access control systems
- Computer proficiency, experience with data entry and word processing, specifically with Google Drive, Microsoft Word and Excel, experience with records management and/or CAD systems preferred.
- Ability to be reliable, responsible and dependable, and fulfill obligations
- Proven ability to utilize discretion and maintain confidentiality
- Valid Maine driver’s license required, clear driver’s history and must meet Colby’s Fleet Safety Policy requirements
- Ability to work independently and walk and stand for long periods of time
- Excellent verbal and written communications skills, with the ability to complete clear, concise, and accurate incident reports and other documentation
- Ability to make an impact through work as a member of a team and diverse community
KEY RELATIONSHIPS
Reporting to the assistant director of security, this position has significant interactions with faculty, staff, students, and other outside constituencies.

General open office and campus environment. Position involves sitting, although frequent movement is necessary; walking, climbing stairs, standing, bending, and twisting is required. Must be able to stand and walk for long periods of time. Occasional lifting is required. Computer usage involving repetitive hand/wrist motion is also necessary and CCTV monitoring.
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
Successful and satisfactory completion of a background check (including a criminal records and driving history check) and a pre-employment physical.
