As a Liquor Tax Examiner at the Bureau of Alcoholic Beverages and Lottery Operations (BABLO), you will be critical to the regulation of this growing industry. You will go to work every day knowing that you are an important part of a team that keeps the people of Maine safe.
This is intermediate-level regulatory work which offers the opportunity for limited remote work as well as career development and advancement- both within the Bureau and across Maine state government. BABLO provides training for all new hires, so you do not need direct experience in auditing or tax examination. Our employees’ success is important to us- that's why we make sure new hires feel supported in mastering a task before moving on to the next one. Once trained, typical daily tasks and duties will include (but are not limited to):
- Calculating excise tax reports required from wholesalers and manufacturers.
- Auditing invoices & reports.
- Issuing approvals or denials of alcoholic beverage label registrations and related regulatory filings.
- Corresponding with members of the industry and the public.
- Reviewing and issuing or denying licenses.
- Reconciling funds and accounts, processing refunds, and collecting protested checks and incorrect payments.
- Instructing industry members in to ensure compliance with applicable laws, rules, and best practices.
- Reviewing advertisements and promotions.
KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:
Ability to:
- Perform audits on the records and books of licensees.
- Stay current and understand, discuss, explain, and apply applicable laws, rules, policies, procedures, forms, computerized systems, and terminology.
- Communicate clearly and effectively, including writing concise reports and composing standard business correspondence.
- Examine documents/information, determine facts, detect errors and irregularities, and take action as authorized.
- Prepare Excel worksheets and perform data entry.
- Reconcile funds, complete refunds, and process protested payments.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience in accounting or auditing. Demonstrated aptitude to learn and use critical thinking skills.
