Southern Maine Invasive Aquatic Management (SMIAM) is looking for three to four reliable crew members to join our team for the summer season, from May 19th through the end of August. This position is ideal for college students on summer break, with hourly wages ranging from $28 to $35.
With over a decade of experience in freshwater invasive species management, SMIAM specializes in controlling Variable Leaf Milfoil and Swollen Bladderwort. This summer, we’re contracted for at least 1,200 hours of work across Thompson Lake, Shapleigh Pond, Mousam Lake, Cobbossee Watershed, Dundee Pond, and North Gorham Pond.
As part of our crew, you’ll assist in removing and managing invasive aquatic plants. Responsibilities include:
- Diving in shallow waters (3'-10' deep) using air supplied by a compressor to hand-remove plants
- Collecting floating plant fragments
- Organizing removed plant material on our suction harvester boat
- Deploying benthic barriers to block sunlight and prevent Milfoil growth
All wetsuits and dive equipment are provided.
Job Requirements:
- Ability to lift and carry 50 pounds
- Comfortable working outdoors for 10-hour shifts, 3-5 days per week, in all weather conditions
- Comfortable working in and under water, sometimes with low visibility
- Willingness to commute to Oxford, Gorham, and Shapleigh, Maine
Compensation:
- $28 per hour starting wage
- $35 per hour for one candidate with management experience
- Additional pay for candidates with prior Milfoil removal experience
While PADI certification is beneficial, it is not required by OSHA since we use an air compressor instead of scuba tanks. However, some diving experience is preferred.
