Position Overview
The Director of Finance is responsible for managing all financial operations of the organization, with a balance of strategic oversight and day-to-day accounting work. This role is ideal for a finance professional who enjoys being actively involved in the details—especially accounts payable and expense management—while also partnering with leadership and the board on financial planning and decision-making.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Management & Reporting
- Manage all accounting and financial operations, including month-end and year-end close
- Work with contracted partial controller to prepare accurate and timely financial statements and internal reports
- Present financial information to the Executive Director and Board of Directors
- Maintain internal controls appropriate for a small organization
Budgeting & Planning
- Lead the annual budgeting process and monitor budget-to-actual performance
- Prepare cash flow projections and financial forecasts
- Support program budgeting and financial sustainability planning
Accounts Payable (Hands-On)
- Process and manage all accounts payable functions, including:
- Reviewing, coding, and entering vendor invoices
- Processing check and ACH payments
- Managing reimbursements and credit card expenses
- Ensure expenses are correctly allocated to programs, grants, and cost centers
- Maintain organized AP documentation and ensure timely vendor payments
Grants & Compliance
- Track grant and restricted fund expenditures
- Prepare financial reports for funders as required
- Coordinate annual audit or financial review
- Assist with preparation of IRS Form 990 and other required filings
Policies & Systems
- Maintain and improve financial policies and procedures
- Oversee accounting software and financial systems (e.g., QuickBooks)
- Identify opportunities to streamline and improve financial processes
Qualifications
Required
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
- 5+ years of accounting or financial management experience
- Experience working in or with a small nonprofit organization
- Strong, hands-on experience with accounts payable and general accounting
- Knowledge of nonprofit accounting principles and GAAP
Preferred
- CPA or advanced accounting credential
- Experience with grants and restricted funds
- Familiarity with QuickBooks or similar nonprofit accounting systems
