About Camp Kawanhee
Camp Kawanhee for Boys is a traditional summer camp located on the shores of Webb Lake in beautiful Weld, Maine. For more than 100 years, Kawanhee has provided campers with opportunities to build confidence, independence, friendships, and new skills through outdoor adventure and a strong residential camp community.
We are seeking a dependable, hardworking, and versatile Part-Time Maintenance Assistant to help care for our historic camp property, buildings, grounds, and facilities.
This is an excellent position for someone who enjoys hands-on work, working outdoors, solving problems, and seeing the immediate results of their efforts.
Position Summary
The Maintenance Assistant works closely with Kawanhee’s Property Manager to support the ongoing maintenance, repair, improvement, and seasonal operation of the camp.
Camp Kawanhee includes numerous cabins, program buildings, staff residences, recreational facilities, waterfront areas, roads, trails, utilities, and extensive grounds. Because of the variety of the property, no two days are exactly the same.
Projects may range from repairing a cabin door or replacing damaged boards to painting, mowing, moving equipment, preparing buildings for the summer season, or assisting with larger renovation and construction projects.
Primary Responsibilities
Responsibilities may include:
- Perform routine maintenance and minor repairs to camp buildings and facilities.
- Assist with basic carpentry, painting, staining, and general construction projects.
- Maintain camp grounds, including mowing, trimming, brush removal, leaf cleanup, and other landscaping tasks.
- Assist with maintenance of roads, trails, waterfront areas, docks, and outdoor program spaces.
- Help open camp facilities in the spring and close and winterize facilities in the fall.
- Move furniture, equipment, supplies, and building materials throughout the property.
- Assist with basic plumbing, electrical, and mechanical projects under appropriate supervision.
- Help identify maintenance needs and potential safety concerns throughout camp.
- Maintain clean and organized work areas, shops, tools, and equipment.
- Operate hand tools, power tools, lawn equipment, and other maintenance equipment safely.
- Assist contractors and vendors working on the property as needed.
- Support renovation, improvement, and construction projects throughout the year.
- Respond to routine maintenance requests during the summer camp season.
- Perform other property and facility-related duties as needed.
Qualifications
We are looking for someone who is reliable, self-motivated, and comfortable working both independently and as part of a team.
Ideal candidates will have:
- General maintenance, construction, carpentry, landscaping, property management, or similar hands-on experience.
- Basic familiarity with hand and power tools.
- Ability and willingness to learn new skills.
- Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to work independently after receiving direction.
- A positive attitude and willingness to tackle a wide variety of projects.
- Reliable transportation and a valid driver's license.
- Ability to work safely and follow established procedures.
- Dependability and consistent attendance.
Experience in carpentry, plumbing, electrical work, small-engine repair, construction, landscaping, or building maintenance is particularly valuable but is not required in every area. We are interested in finding someone with a strong work ethic who is willing to learn.
Physical Requirements
This is an active, hands-on position. Candidates should be able to:
- Work indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions.
- Regularly stand, walk, bend, kneel, climb, and perform physical work.
- Safely lift and carry approximately 50 pounds.
- Work on uneven terrain common to a rural camp property.
- Safely use ladders, hand tools, power tools, and maintenance equipment.
Schedule
This is a part-time position, with scheduling based on camp and property needs. Hours may vary seasonally, with opportunities for additional hours during busy periods such as spring opening, the summer camp season, fall closing, and major facility projects.
We are open to discussing a regular weekly schedule that works for both the successful candidate and Camp Kawanhee.
