JOB DESCRIPTION:
This is structure and craft work in supervising the electrical maintenance program and/or construction projects of a correctional facility. Work includes planning, assigning, and supervising the work of a master, journeyman, and helper electricians and installing, maintaining, and repairing electrical equipment and systems; and instructing, overseeing and monitoring inmate behavior for activities of an inmate crew engaged in assigned tasks. This class is differentiated from the Electrician II classification in that a major portion of this job is spent planning, directing, and supervising the work of others and developing and carrying out an electrical maintenance program. Work is performed under limited supervision.
REPRESENTATIVE TASKS:
- Plans, directs, and oversees the installation and maintenance of outside transmission lines, including poles, crossarms, lightning arresters, transformers, and capacitors in order to ensure work is performed safely and conforms with electrical code.
- Directs and inspects the installation and maintenance of light and power circuits in order to ensure circuits are installed properly and are functioning correctly.
- Plans, directs, monitors, inspects, and participates in wiring of various state owned buildings during construction or remodeling in order to ensure work is performed in accordance with electrical code.
- Orders and maintains inventory of materials and equipment in order to maintain an adequate inventory of electrical supplies.
- Plans jobs in order to ensure proper repair, installation, and maintenance of electrical systems.
- Records various procedures and meter readings in order to maintain accurate and up-to-date records.
- Inspects electrical systems, projects, appliances, equipment, and buildings in order to ensure safe and proper functioning.
- Monitors and controls inmate behavior in order to accomplish assigned tasks and maintain institutional security.
- Supervises and instructs inmates working on electrical projects in order to ensure work is accomplished correctly and safely.
- Implements and complies with human resource laws, policies, procedures and practices such as: AA/EEO, recruitment, employment, position classification, performance appraisals, training, discipline, contract administration, human resource components of security protocols of agency information security and confidentiality policies, and employee safety.
KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: (These are required to successfully perform the work assigned)
- Knowledge of applicable laws, rules, regulations, policies and procedures.
- Knowledge of the State and National Electrical Code.
- Knowledge of the tools, materials, methods, and practices of the electrical trade.
- Knowledge of the principles and theory of electricity.
- Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the electrical trade.
- Ability to supervise subordinate personnel.
- Ability to plan, assign, and evaluate the work of others.
- Ability to interpret and work from sketches, diagrams, and blueprints.
- Ability to keep records and files.
- Ability to estimate materials required for a job.
- Ability to detect and repair defects in a variety of electrical systems and equipment.
- Ability to use and care for tools and equipment used in the electrical trade.
- Ability to use applicable computer programs.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: (Entry level knowledges, skills, and/or abilities may be acquired through, BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO the following coursework/training and/or experience).
A High School Diploma or equivalent and a current valid Master Electrician’s license as issued by the Electrician’s Examining Board and two (2) years experience at the Master level.
LICENSING/REGISTRATION/CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: (These must be met by all employees prior to attaining permanent status in this class).
A Maine Master Electrician’s license as issued by the Electrician’s Examining Board.
