Big Room Studios is a software development services company located in Portland, Maine. We work with amazing clients in a variety of industries to design and build custom software solutions. We’re looking for an Associate Software Engineer to join our passionate group of software engineers, operations specialists, and project managers. Founded in 2002 with a focus on emerging web technologies, Big Room began as a PHP shop developing a flexible CMS framework for websites and applications—today Big Room Studios is at the forefront of custom application development and digital product design.
JOB DESCRIPTION
Big Room Studios is looking for an entry-level software engineer to contribute to the writing, testing and maintenance of custom web applications, who is motivated by finding solutions to complex problems across a wide variety of industries. Most of the time you’ll be part of an agile team developing an web application, but as you gain experience you may be embedded on a client’s team for your particular technical expertise. When not working on an application project or staffing a client team, you will be contributing to our open source or other internal initiatives.

The successful candidate will be seeking to gain experience with both frontend and backend technologies, particularly in the JavaScript ecosystem.
Responsibilities
- Build, test, and deploy software features with partnership of senior engineers
- Iterate toward clean, concise, and efficient code
- Participate in code and process reviews
- Help manage code documentation and version control
- Work in an agile environment to release software on a regular schedule
- Troubleshoot and debug software
- Participate in on-call rotation to respond to production issues
Qualifications
- Computer Science BS or equivalent experience (ex: coding academy, demonstrable open source contributions, etc)
- 0 - 2 years of relevant software engineering work experience
- Strong computer science fundamentals
- Values collaboration with peers and feedback
- Ability to demonstrate curiosity and desire to learn
This is a full-time position. BRS offers a highly creative environment for enthusiastic developers. Ability to commute on-site is preferred, though remote work is available for qualified candidates.
