Job Posting: Part-Time or Contract Accountant/Bookkeeper
The Center for Maine Contemporary Art (CMCA) is an ambitious small museum devoted to the art of the present moment, located in downtown Rockland, Maine. CMCA’s mission is to advance contemporary art in Maine through direct engagement with artists and the public, creating exceptional exhibitions and outstanding education programs that communicate the transformative power of the art of our time.
CMCA seeks a part-time Accountant/Bookkeeper comfortable dealing with complex financial data and with experience in non-profit accounting. As the Bookkeeper you will help us in recording and maintaining daily financial transactions, paying bills, collecting debts, performing reconciliations, coordinating payroll with the outside payroll company, preparing financial statements for the Finance Committee, creating monthly reports for staff, and assisting the outside accountant in closing the books and tax filing.
Reports: to the Associate Director; works with the Executive Director and Finance Committee.
General Responsibilities
●Collect invoices from staff and pay bills
●Assist in generating invoices
●Coordinate payroll with outside payroll company
●Keep track of all payments, revenues, and receivables. Maintain records of financial transactions by posting and verifying
●Account for financial transactions with the established Chart of Accounts using QuickBooks Online. Maintain a balanced General Ledger
●Reconcile accounts receivable and payable so that all payments and receipts are properly accounted for in books of accounts (i.e., deposits in bank)
●Advise on how to improve bookkeeping policies and procedures and implement best practices
●Assist in developing budgets. Monitor variances from the projected budget on a monthly basis and report to management
●Prepare financial reports by collecting, analyzing, and summarizing accounting information.
Prepare charts and reports as required by management, including monthly reports to department heads.
●Ensure compliance with non-profit federal, state, and local legal requirements and advise management on compliance needs
●Attend Finance Committee meetings as needed
●Prepare IRS 1099R’s as required
●Provide information to the outside accountant for Form 990 tax preparation

●Bachelor's degree in accounting, or equivalent job experience. CPA is desirable
●Previous bookkeeping experience required, including experience in non-profit accounting
●Knowledge of bookkeeping and accounting methods, including double-entry bookkeeping, accrual accounting, and cash accounting
●Proficiency in QuickBooks Online and Excel software required

Salary negotiated based on qualifications and experience
