The Riley School seeks an experienced, part-time Social Studies teacher for children in grades 3-8. Riley is a progressive, coeducational school with mixed-age classrooms. Our program serves children ages 2-14 in Early childhood (ages 2-4), Early Elementary (K-1), Upper Elementary (grades 2-4), and Middle School (grades 5-8). This role is for a Social Studies teacher who is well versed in integrating history, civics, geography, and critical thinking into your classroom, and who is gifted at differentiation of instruction.
Position Overview
The Middle School Social Studies teacher will engage students in grades 3 through 8 in the exploration of reading, researching, writing, and project-based learning. The successful candidate will foster a love for learning, help students develop critical thinking skills, prepare them for future success in academics and in life, and develop a global perspective as citizens of the world.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and deliver engaging and age-appropriate lessons aligned with Riley’s mission and Maine state standards.
- Teach a range of topics, including reading, creative and analytical writing, U.S. and world history, presentation skills, et cetera.
- Assess and support individual student needs to promote growth and learning.
- Create a welcoming and inclusive classroom environment that nurtures curiosity and respect.
- Collaborate with colleagues to align curriculum and participate in interdisciplinary initiatives.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in History, Education, or a related field.
- Maine state teaching certification and experience working with elementary and middle school students.
- Strong classroom management and communication skills.
- Enthusiasm for integrating the responsible use of technology and innovative teaching practices.
- Commitment to fostering a culture of inclusivity and belonging.
- An understanding of and interest in progressive education.
- The ability to be flexible and responsive to student needs and interests.
