About Richardson Allen Furniture:
Richardson Allen Furniture produces high-end, made-to-order outdoor furniture for customers throughout the U.S. We use traditional mortise-and-tenon joinery with solid mahogany and teak to create pieces that endure for decades in outdoor conditions. Thoughtful craftsmanship, meticulous attention to detail, and a strong dedication to quality have guided Richardson Allen through nearly 45 years of business in Southern Maine.
Position Overview:
Woodworkers at Richardson Allen are responsible for fabricating our entire line of standard products (from tables and chairs to lounge seating, swings, planter boxes, and more). Woodworkers are part of a small team who utilize saws, shaping tools, mortising routers, and belt sanders to turn milled lumber into fully assembled pieces of furniture. Once fabricated, furniture is passed to the finishing team, who sand, inspect for quality, and finally finish pieces in our professional spray booth.
Key Responsibilities:
–––Learn how Richardson Allen furniture is made–––
–Use models and drawings to construct furniture parts from milled lumber.
–Develop an understanding of wood to create strength and stability in all joinery applications.
–Become familiar with the application of West System Marine Epoxy Glue.
–––Safe Use of Woodshop–––
–Learn how to safely use table saws, router tables with various cutting bits, band saws, chop saws, belt sanders, and more.
–Be conscientious of your space in the woodshop:
–Maintain safe egress.
–Be aware of other people in the shop, especially while using power tools.
–Be vigilant for hazards when using Personal Protective Equipment such as safety glasses, earplugs, and dust masks.
–Keep a clean workspace: manage sawdust, off-cuts, hand tools, clamps, glue clean-up, and other detritus.
Become a valuable part of the Richardson Allen team:
–Woodworker will join a small team on the fabrication side of Richardson Allen’s production process.
–Learn the flow of the woodshop (sharing space, materials and tools, and taking turns as each woodworker moves through similar steps in fabricating individual parts).
–Be flexible: you may spend your time working individually on an assigned piece(s) of furniture, or you might be asked to partner with another woodworker to collaborate on a project.
–As you develop skill and mastery of technique, you will gain autonomy and self-direction in the woodshop. Richardson Allen is a family business, and we hold a lot of trust in our employees to work diligently at a personally sustainable pace, and importantly, to ask for help when needed.
Requirements and Qualifications:
–Familiarity with woodworking tools and techniques is preferred.
–Attention to detail and commitment to high standards of quality.
–Eagerness to learn and receive instruction.
–Strong communication skills and collaborative attitude.
–Comfort working independently.
Training and Development:
As a new member of the woodworking team, woodworkers receive thorough training in the safe use of all woodshop tools and equipment. This training will be adjusted based on the applicant's current skill level, familiarity with the woodshop, and experience.
Every piece of furniture has its own complexities and woodworkers learn by practice how to efficiently build pieces in time with Richardson Allen’s production schedule and deadlines. Woodworkers may be asked to produce a quantity of one part for a piece of furniture to efficiently complete an order, and at other times, they will be tasked with fabricating one item from start to finish (from selecting dimensioned board for parts to final glue-up).
Compensation and Benefits:
This full-time woodworking position will start at $20/hr. After 30 days, new employees will begin receiving a weekly bonus of $95.00, which can be applied to "CoverMe" ACA Health Insurance if they choose. Richardson Allen can arrange for an ACA representative to meet with you to discuss your individual health insurance needs. For the first year, full-time employees will accrue a total of three weeks of paid time off and five paid holidays, and disability and life insurance policy. Richardson Allen offers flexible work hours to accommodate personal scheduling needs.
