We are hiring an Assistant Code Enforcement Officer in the Planning & Code Enforcement Department.
The Assistant Code Enforcement Officer supports the City’s code enforcement operations through inspections, investigations, and interdepartmental collaboration. This position plays a key role in identifying and addressing unsafe, non-compliant, and nuisance properties to protect public health, safety, and welfare. The position reports to the Director of Planning and Code Enforcement, with daily supervision provided by the Master Code Enforcement Officer. The role also works closely with public safety personnel, General Assistance, and housing partners to ensure coordinated and effective service delivery.

Key Responsibilities:
- Conducts inspections of residential and commercial properties to ensure compliance with applicable health, safety, and maintenance standards.
- Proactively identifies, investigates, and documents problem properties, including dangerous buildings, nuisance properties, and junkyards.
- Responds to and investigates neighborhood complaints and recurring issues, including those related to subsidized housing.
- Respond to after-hour emergency code-related situations and be on-call for weekend emergency call ins as determined by Master CEO.
Education and Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent required; college coursework or training in a related field is preferred.
- Relevant certifications must be obtained within 12 months of appointment; candidates with existing certifications may be given preference.
- Experience in inspections, investigations, code enforcement, or related fields is preferred.
- Working knowledge of building construction, maintenance trades, or property management is desirable.
- Any equivalent combination of education and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the primary duties and responsibilities may be considered.

Compensation and Benefits:
- Competitive salary range of $28.77 – $42.25 per hour.
- This position is covered by the General Unit collective bargaining agreement. The next agreement is under negotiation for a July 1, 2026 effective date.

Planning & Code Enforcement collaborate on a wide range of community improvement projects. Both departments are staffed by six full-time employees.
