Position Title: 6th Grade Interdisciplinary Studies Teacher

Reports To: Building Administration (Principal and/or Assistant Principal)

Interdisciplinary Studies is one of the five core classes on our middle school teams and represents a unique opportunity to design and deliver meaningful, engaging learning experiences. Grounded in inquiry- and project-based learning, this course allows teachers the professional freedom to be creative, innovative, and responsive to student interests.
Centered on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, students explore complex global issues through a local lens, engaging in authentic work that matters. Teachers in this role guide students as they think critically, collaborate purposefully, and apply their learning across content areas.
This course is ideal for educators who are passionate about interdisciplinary teaching, real-world connections, and student-centered learning. It offers the rare chance to move beyond traditional boundaries and truly inspire curiosity, creativity, and deep understanding.

Qualifications
Education:
Bachelor's degree in the specific area of teaching.
Certification
Holds appropriate Maine Department of Education Certification.
Preparation
Specific training and preparation to teach at the middle school level.
Performance Responsibilities
Instruction & Curriculum
- Program Planning: Design a program of study that aligns with student needs, interests, and abilities while meeting curriculum goals.
- Objective Setting: Establish clear learning objectives for all lessons and projects.
- Instructional Methods: Employ diverse teaching methods and materials appropriate for meeting stated objectives.
- Substitute Readiness: Organize work and classes so that substitute teachers can step in with minimal loss of learning.
Classroom Environment
- Engagement: Create a classroom atmosphere that encourages participation and is appropriate to student maturity levels.
- Behavior Management: Develop and maintain fair and just classroom rules in alignment with district policies to ensure an orderly learning environment.
- Safety: Take all necessary precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
Assessment & Student Support
- Regular Feedback: Assess student accomplishments regularly and provide timely feedback.
- Specialized Support: Identify student learning difficulties and collaborate with district specialists when required.
- Accessibility: Remain available to students and parents for education-related purposes outside the instructional day as reasonably requested.
Professionalism & Collaboration
- Professional Growth: Strive for continuous professional improvement.
- Team Participation: Attend staff meetings, serve on committees, and actively participate in Professional Learning Communities (PLCs).
- Record Keeping: Maintain accurate and complete records as required by law and district policy.
Physical Demands
- Mobility: Frequently required to sit, stand, walk, climb stairs, bend, pull, push, kneel, and crouch.
- Lifting: Must be able to lift between 25–75 lbs (depending on student size and needs).
Terms of Employment
- Salary & Conditions: To be established by the RSU 57 School Board.
- Evaluation: Performance will be evaluated in accordance with the School Board's policy on evaluation.
